Video door station answered on a smartphone

Building Intercom

Audio and video door entry for condos, strata buildings, offices, houses and gates.

Upgrading older intercoms

Many buildings still have entry panels that dial a landline in each suite. Many residents no longer have landlines, the panels often have no camera, and the building pays for phone lines that are rarely used.

A modern intercom calls an app on each resident’s phone or a video screen in the suite, shows who is at the door, logs every visit, and is managed online by the property manager. The same applies to offices, gates and houses: whoever needs to answer can do it from wherever they are.

Three parts of a good intercom

Video door station
01

The door station

Weather-rated, vandal-resistant, with a camera that sees faces in daylight and at night. For apartment buildings, a directory panel residents can update without a technician visiting.

Answering the door on a phone
02

Where it rings

Residents’ phones, suite monitors, a reception desk or a security office, in the order that suits the building. In a house, the doorbell can ring on the TV, the kitchen touch screen and your phone; with Control4, Intercom Anywhere answers it from anywhere.

What it opens

The intercom is only half the job; the door has to open. We install the electric strike or lock, and connect the intercom to access control for residents and staff, and to power door operators so the door swings open for someone using a wheelchair or carrying parcels.

Where we install it

Condos and strata buildings

Lobby and parkade entry, resident directories, phone app calling and visit logs. Upgrades can be phased so the building is never without entry.

Offices

After-hours visitors, deliveries and secure suites, answered by reception or forwarded to staff.

Houses

Video doorbells and door stations connected to the smart home, answered anywhere.

Gates and estates

Gate stations with keypad, camera and remote opening from the house or your phone.

Intercom, in detail

Audio or video?

Audio-only intercoms are simple and inexpensive, but residents and staff are deciding who to let in by voice alone. Video lets them see who is at the door, and see whether anyone is trying to follow them in.

For most buildings today, video is the standard we recommend, especially at main entrances and parkades.

Directories and privacy

Entry panels can list residents by name, by suite number, or by a code that only the resident shares. Code-based directories avoid posting residents’ names in the lobby.

With modern systems the property manager updates the directory online when residents move, so there is no waiting for a technician.

Connection: landline, internet or cellular

Legacy panels dial out over a phone line. Modern panels connect over the internet, and many include a cellular connection, so the building doesn’t need a phone line at all and the intercom keeps working if the internet goes down.

We recommend the right connection for the building and confirm signal strength before installation.

Deliveries and couriers

Parcel deliveries are a daily challenge in multi-unit buildings. Residents can open the door remotely from their phone, and property managers can issue time-limited codes to regular couriers.

Combined with cameras, every delivery entry is recorded, which helps resolve disputes about missing parcels.

Accessibility

Entry panels should be mounted at an accessible height with clear, tactile buttons and visual indicators that show when a call is connected and when the door is released.

When paired with a power door operator, releasing the door from a suite can also open it, so someone in a wheelchair doesn’t have to pull a heavy door while it is unlocked.

For houses

In a home, a video door station or doorbell can ring on your phone, the touch screens and the TV. With Control4, Intercom Anywhere answers it from anywhere, and touch screens double as room-to-room intercoms.

A gate station at the end of the driveway can let guests in and record every arrival.

Questions we are asked

Can we stop paying for phone lines for the intercom?

Usually. Replacing a landline-based panel with one that calls residents over the internet or cellular often removes the monthly line costs.

Do residents need to install anything?

Just the app on their phone. Residents without smartphones can be called on a regular phone number instead.

Is visit video recorded?

It can be, either on the intercom system or with your camera system, giving a record of who was let in and when.
